The new San Antonio State Hospital will be a welcome addition to the Texas healthcare landscape when it is completed in 2024. Designed with world-class features and amenities, it will replace an outdated psychiatric hospital in San Antonio for patients with behavioral health issues. It is a joint project between the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio and the Texas Health and Human Services Commission. The budget is $357 million.

With construction currently underway, the nearly 480,000-square-foot, three-story hospital will provide long- and short-term residential and crisis treatment. The 300-bed, state-of-the-art facility will include areas for patient therapy and learning, a kitchen, a half-court gymnasium, a chapel, a pharmacy, and multiple courtyards.

Its patient-first layout will incorporate private rooms for all patients and a floor plan that features more open areas and allows more natural lighting throughout the building.

San Antonio State Hospital is one of 10 state hospitals that the Texas Health and Human Services Commission operates for individuals with mental health disorders.
